Philippe compared ophcrack and rainbowcrack in a configuration with small tables (380Mb) and a configuration with large tables (64Gb) both for LMHashes. For the same table size, ophcrack is much faster, or it can use much smaller tables for the same performance. Bigger is thus not always better. Compare the ophcrack DVD set with comparable products from Rainbowcrack-online. The LM hashes of mixed case alphanumeric passwords with 32 symbols and space fits on a single ophcrack DVD (8GB), while rainbowcrack-online requires 230GB and is sold on a hard-disk. To get the same coverage as the NTHash DVD of ophcrack you would need to purchase several rainbow crack tables, since rainbowcrack does not support multiple character sets in a same table. Two rainbowcrack table sets totaling 80GB still do not cover all the passwords of the NTHash DVD.
Finally the cost of the two DVDs is about $500 while the mentioned rainbowcrack tables would total $2300.
